Jonathan de Guzman hat-trick downs woeful Young Boys

Jonathan de Guzman scores three as Napoli cruise past Young Boys at Stadio San Paolo.

Jonathan de Guzman scored a hat-trick as Napoli beat Young Boys 3-0 at Stadio San Paolo to move level with Sparta Prague in Group I of the Europa League.

The Dutchman broke the Swiss club's stubborn first-half resistance by opening the scoring prior to the break, before adding two more in the second half to seal a comfortable win.

Victory means that the Italians sit second in the group on goal difference behind the Russians, who beat pointless Slovan Bratislava in the Czech Republic tonight.

Having lost 2-0 to Uli Forte's side in Switzerland two weeks ago, it was clear that revenge was on the agenda for the Partenopei tonight as Napoli dominated the first 20 minutes.

Lorenzo Insigne had their first sight at goal, forcing Yvon Mvogo into a smart save on 14 minutes in one of several chances for the hosts during the opening 45 minutes.

It was De Guzman who led Napoli's charge for the breakthrough, with the ex-Swansea City man twice going close before striking gold in timely fashion. He lined up a shot from long range and managed to find the top corner to leave Mvogo with no chance.

It should have been two on the hour mark as Insigne spurned a fine chance by slicing his shot and watching it trickle agonisingly wide.

However, De Guzman spared his teammate's blushes by tapping home a Duvan Zapata pass into an empty net, before sealing his treble seven minutes from time.

Young Boys finally sprung to life in stoppage time, as Adrian Nikci forced Rafael Cabral into a rare save to deny them a consolation.
