Rafael Benitez backs Jonjo Shelvey for England call-up

Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez believes that Jonjo Shelvey's current form is worthy of consideration for an England recall.

Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has insisted that Jonjo Shelvey's current form warrants consideration for an England call-up.

The 24-year-old has made six appearances for his country so far, but has not featured for England since moving to Newcastle in January.

Shelvey acknowledged that it would be more difficult for him to force his way into the reckoning while he is playing in the Championship, but Benitez believes that the former Liverpool man should be in Gareth Southgate's thinking.

"He is playing every game, so I am really pleased with him. We were talking about maybe he could play for England, maybe it was too early, but why not when he is playing as well as he is now," he told The Chronicle.

"He is trying to get to a really good level. I am happy now. He knew before that there was no doubt about his quality. It was very clear and I am happy with that."

Andros Townsend left the Magpies during the summer due to concerns over losing his England place while in the Championship.
