Luuk de Jong: 'Fans pushed Newcastle United to Aston Villa win'

Newcastle United striker Luuk de Jong thanks the St James' Park faithful that inspired them to a late win over Aston Villa which put an end to their miserable home form.

Luuk de Jong has credited the committed support of the Newcastle United fans for their stoppage-time Premier League victory over Aston Villa on Saturday.

The Magpies had previously lost five consecutive matches at St James' Park before Loic Remy's late strike earned them three points in the dying minutes.

However, rather than let the nerves surrounding another possible home failure transfer onto the pitch, the Toon Army rallied behind the players and De Jong has thanked them for their vocal backing.

He told the Gazette: "It was really important to win at home, especially for the fans.

"They pushed us on in the last five or 10 minutes, and that helped us. We created some good chances and eventually at the end we scored the goal."

Dutch international striker De Jong has yet to score for Newcastle since signing on loan from Bundesliga outfit Borussia Mönchengladbach in the January transfer window.
