Wellington had the first real chance of the match as Jeremy Brockie was played through by Tyler Boyd, but Fabricio Coloccini made a last-minute interception.
The Magpies took the lead with 41 minutes on the clock through Yoan Gouffran's looping header after Vurnon Anita's cross left the goalkeeper in no-man's land.
Anita had an opportunity to score one himself with around 20 minutes remaining with a clear shot at goal from the edge of the area, but his shot sailed over the bar.
Gouffran could have perhaps doubled his tally in the final 10 minutes after raiding down the right wing before cutting inside and taking a shot, but Wellington kept Alan Pardew's side at bay.
