Gianni Infantino edges Sheikh Salman, second round needed in FIFA election

There is no clear winner after the first round of the election of FIFA's new president, with Gianni Infantino edging out Sheikh Salman by three votes.

A second round of voting will be required in the FIFA presidential election after no clear favourite emerged from the first round.

Sheikh Salman was favourite before voting began, but he finished three votes behind Gianni Infantino after the first round in a surprise result.

A two-thirds majority of 138 votes was needed to win the election at the first round, but Infantino's total of 88 was 50 short.

Prince Ali received 27 votes and it is reported that his support could go Infantino's way here on in as he and Salman reportedly do not see eye to eye.

Jerome Champagne managed just seven votes in the first round, but he will again be part of the second round unless he decides to drop out.

Victory will be sealed if any candidate accrues 104 votes at the next stage, but if not one candidate will drop out and the vote will go to a third round.

Earlier today, Tokyo Sexwale pulled out of the race so was not included in the voting.
