Nottingham Forest's new owners are looking for a new "iconic" manager to take charge at the City Ground. Here, Sports Mole brings you some of the contenders for the role.

Nottingham Forest's new Kuwaiti owners had not even been in control for 24 hours when they decided to sack manager Steve Cotterill with immediate effect.

A statement from the Al-Hasawi family has since revealed that they are seeking an "iconic" figure to succeed Cotterill at the City Ground helm.

With that in mind, Sports Mole has assessed the five men believed to be the main contenders for the role.

Mick McCarthy

Some reports have claimed that McCarthy has already held extended talks over becoming the club's next manager. As a result, the former Republic of Ireland coach has been installed as the favourite to be handed the job. What may well appeal to the Forest owners is his recent promotion record, having guided both Sunderland and Wolverhampton Wanderers to the Premier League. The 53-year-old has been out of work since being sacked by Wolves in February of this year.

Odds: 4/5

Glenn Hoddle

A spokesman for the Al-Hasawi family recently denied speculation that they have discussed the vacancy with Hoddle. Having been out of management since 2006, the former England boss is said to be eager to return to the game. While his managerial record may not be the greatest, Hoddle would provide the owners with the big name they are looking for.

Odds: 6/4

Darren Ferguson

Fergie junior has been linked with the post ever since the takeover was announced. Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony took to Twitter yesterday to deny claims that they had received an approach for their manager. However, speculation has suggested that Ferguson would be tempted to the City Ground with the promise of substantial funds in the transfer market.

Odds: 3/1

Roy Keane

Former Manchester United midfielder Keane seems to get linked with every Championship vacancy these days. However, the Forest job is slightly different to the others as Keane spent three years as a player with the club. Despite enduring a difficult spell in charge of Ipswich Town, the ex-Republic of Ireland international did guide Sunderland to the Premier League as champions. Like Hoddle, he would also be the big-name appointment.

Odds: 8/1

Luiz Felipe Scolari

A somewhat surprising contender, Scolari has been backed by several punters over the past few hours. The Brazilian is believed to be a big fan of the club, having watched their rise to the European Cup under Brian Clough with much admiration. The former Chelsea coach, who is currently in charge of Palmeiras, is said to be open to a return to England.

Odds: 16/1
