George Boyd double helps Peterborough United to three points

A first-half George Boyd brace sends Peterborough on their way to a 3-1 win over Huddersfield Town.

A first-half George Boyd double has lifted Peterborough United off the bottom of the Championship with a 3-1 win over high-flying Huddersfield Town.

In the first half, Peterborough dominated the early stages and Boyd grabbed the opener with a shot in the 16th minute.

It was two for the hosts just eight minutes later, Boyd again finishing well past Alex Smithies in the Huddersfield goal.

Jermaine Beckford and Daniel Ward both had chances to reduce the home side's lead before the break, but Robert Olejnik in the Peterborough goal was able to keep them out.

It took just three minutes of the second half for Peterborough to extend their lead to 3-0 - this time it was Kgosi Ntlhe who headed past Smithies.

Huddersfield finally managed to beat Olejnik on 51 minutes, Adam Hammill shooting low to give the away side a slim chance of a point.

Two minutes later Hammill put a free kick from a good position wide as Huddersfield pressed, but Boyd again started to come into the game. He fired wired in the 63rd minute, looking for his hat-trick.

The game started to get a little scrappy before Berahino tested Smithies in the 72nd minute, the goalkeeper saving with his legs.

Oliver Norwood shot over from distance in the 77th minute as the away side started to run out of ideas.

Peterborough were able to hold out for a vital win that has lifted them above Ipswich Town at the bottom of the Championship.
