Preview: Lyon vs. Paris Saint-Germain - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Ligue 1 clash between Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Paris Saint-Germain will be attempting to record their fifth straight win in all competitions when they continue their Ligue 1 campaign away to Lyon on Sunday night.

Both teams were in Champions League action during the week, Lyon picking up a point at home to Zenit St Petersburg before PSG recorded a hugely impressive 3-0 home victory over Real Madrid.

Lyon finished third in Ligue 1 last season, with a total of 72 points seeing them end the campaign three points off second-placed Lille. Les Gones won 21 of their 38 league fixtures last term - suffering eight defeats - to book their spot in the group stage of the Champions League.

Sylvinho's side opened their European campaign with a modest home draw against Zenit on Tuesday night. Sardar Azmoun actually sent the Russian side ahead in the latter stages of the first period, but Memphis Depay levelled the scores from the penalty spot in the 51st minute.

Lyon have also been indifferent in the early stages of the new Ligue 1 campaign, winning just two of their five matches to sit eighth in the table. The seven-time French champions opened with back-to-back victories over Monaco and Angers without conceding before suffering a 1-0 loss at Montpellier.

Sylvinho's side have drawn their last two against Bordeaux and Amiens, but they are only four points off league leaders PSG, who have already been defeated in the early stages of the 2019-20 campaign.

Lyon also recorded a 2-1 victory over the French champions in their last meeting earlier this year, while they have not lost a home league fixture against the capital giants since November 2016, which is an indication of the task facing Thomas Tuchel's side at the Groupama Stadium.

There was not too much confidence surrounding PSG on Wednesday night as they entered the clash with Madrid without Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Edinson Cavani. It was a fine display from the hosts, though, with Angel Di Maria scoring a brace before Thomas Meunier added a third late on.

The French champions opened their 2019-20 Ligue 1 campaign with a 3-0 win over Nimes on August 11 before suffering a surprise defeat at Rennes one week later. Tuchel's side have bounced back impressively, though, to win their last three in France's top flight against Toulouse, Metz and Strasbourg.

Last weekend's clash with Strasbourg was actually incredibly close to finishing 0-0, only for Neymar to come up with a spectacular late winner. The Brazilian was booed by the PSG fans following a summer of transfer speculation, but there is no question that he makes a huge difference to the team.

Tuchel will be hoping that his key players can pull together this season, and Mbappe should be available to return from a hamstring problem this weekend in what would be a huge boost to the visitors.

PSG have found it tough in their last two trips to Lyon in Ligue 1 - suffering back-to-back defeats - but both teams had mid-week matches, and the draw against Zenit means that Lyon are without a victory since August 16 when they thumped Angers 6-0 in front of their own supporters.

Team News

Thiago Mendes and Youssouf Kone are both available for Lyon following domestic suspensions, and the pair should return to the home side's starting XI for Sunday night's clash.

Houssem Aouar and Joachim Andersen were both left on the bench against Zenit but could figure here, while the front three - Depay, Moussa Dembele and Bertrand Traore - should remain unchanged.

Jeff Reine-Adelaide is also pushing to keep his spot in the middle of the park, although Lucas Tousart is another option for Les Gones this weekend.

As for PSG, Cavani is once again expected to miss out with a hip problem, but Mbappe has been tipped to recover from a hamstring injury to make the starting XI.

Neymar is also available following a European suspension, and the Brazil international could join Di Maria and Mbappe in the final third, with the latter taking up a more central position.

Julian Draxler is still out with a foot problem, though, while defenders Thilo Kehrer and Colin Dagba are struggling with foot and muscular injuries respectively.

There are not expected to be many changes from the clash with Madrid, meaning that the likes of Meunier, Juan Bernat and Idrissa Gueye should keep their positions.

Lyon possible starting lineup: Lopes; Dubois, Andersen, Marcelo, Kone; Aouar, Mendes, Reine-Adelaide; Memphis, Dembele, Traore

PSG possible starting lineup: Navas; Meunier, Silva, Kimpembe, Bernat; Verratti, Marquinhos, Gueye; Di Maria, Mbappe, Neymar

We say: Lyon 1-2 PSG

PSG could be boosted by the return of Mbappe this weekend, which would make a huge difference for the French champions. Lyon have enjoyed their last two home games against the capital side, but we expect Tuchel's team to pick up three important points on Sunday night.
