Edinson Cavani hat-trick leaves Paris Saint-Germain on verge of Ligue 1 title

Edinson Cavani scores a hat-trick to lead Paris Saint-Germain to a 6-0 win over Guingamp, leaving them on the verge of retaining the Ligue 1 title.

Paris Saint-Germain have extended their lead at the top of the Ligue 1 table to six points with just two matches remaining after thrashing Guingamp 6-0 at Parc des Princes this evening.

The home side were ahead less than two minutes into the tie as Serge Aurier slotted the ball in for Edinson Cavani to blast past Jonas Lossl from just a couple of yards out.

Guingamp quickly looked to get back on level terms, but Salvatore Sirigu was alert in the PSG goal to deny Claudio Beauvue from a free kick, before punching a Jeremy Sorbon header away.

Having survived the attempted comeback, Paris doubled their advantage with less than 20 minutes gone as Zlatan Ibrahimovic sliced the ball into the top of the net from a Marco Verratti cross.

Cavani and Javier Pastore both had opportunities to increase the defending champions' lead further before half time, but they were unable to get the better of the Guingamp keeper again before the interval.

PSG were able to add a third just a few minutes after the restart though as Ibrahimovic picked out Cavani with a through-ball, leaving the Uruguayan to fire into the top right corner.

Ibrahimovic was on the attack again just four minutes later, setting up Maxwell with a chip into the box, leaving the defender to head into an empty net as Lossl had rushed out to stop the striker.

Cavani continued to pose a threat going forward for the home side, and he completed his hat-trick with 20 minutes to go when Verratti found him from a free kick, allowing the striker to rifle the ball into the bottom corner.

Ibrahimovic came close to making it six for the hosts when he tried his luck from a 30-yard free kick, but Lossl made a diving save to deny the striker, pulling off another save moments later as the Swedish international tried to head in from the resulting corner.

Ibrahimovic was able to punish the visitors further in stoppage time though as Sorbon brought the striker down in the box, leaving him to add his second of the night from the penalty spot just before the full-time whistle.

The result means that PSG will retain their title if Lyon fail to beat Caen tomorrow afternoon.
