Clubs, players to decide on anti-homophobia laces

Individual clubs and players get the chance to decide whether or not to wear anti-homophobia laces during this weekend's fixtures.

Individual clubs and players will be able to decide whether or not to support an anti-homophobia campaign this weekend, according to the Premier League.

Gay rights charity Stonewall has sent out laces to all 134 professional clubs in England and Scotland, asking players to wear the laces during this weekend's fixtures.

A bookmakers and the Right Behind Gay Footballers campaign have also backed the plans, however the Premier League has said it was not consulted beforehand.

"It is up to individual clubs and players to decide whether they support this campaign," said a Premier League spokesperson.

"However, we were not consulted about this particular campaign. Had we been involved earlier in the process we could have worked with Stonewall to consider things like boot deals, the use of particular betting partners, and other issues."

Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton recently claimed he was supporting the campaign.
