Southampton pile misery on Queens Park Rangers

Goals from Rickie Lambert, Jason Puncheon and an Anton Ferdinand own goal give Southampton the win against QPR in this afternoon's bottom-of-the-table clash.

Queens Park Rangers are still searching for their first Premier League win after Southampton came out on top in this afternoon's bottom-of-the-table clash.

The Saints started brighter and came close to taking the lead in the opening 10 minutes when first Adam Lallana volleyed just over before Jason Puncheon's cross-shot beat everyone but not the post.

QPR came into the match soon after and Adel Taarabt and Junior Hoilett both came close before Southampton took the lead.

It came from Rickie Lambert, who was brave going in to head the ball with Samba Diakite's boot high to net his first goal in seven appearances.

The visitors made it two just before the half-time whistle when Puncheon cut inside from the right and fired into the corner from just outside the area.

Rangers came out strongly after the break and pulled a goal back in the 49th minute when Taarabt crossed for an unmarked Hoilett to head home.

QPR pushed for an equaliser but it was Southampton who killed the game off in the 83rd minute when Morgan Schneiderlin's cross cannoned in off Anton Ferdinand for an own goal.

Southampton remain in 19th position on eight points while QPR are now five points from safety.
