Graeme Murty steps down as Rangers manager

Graeme Murty steps down from his role as interim Rangers manager amid reports that Steven Gerrard will take over at Ibrox.

Graeme Murty has stepped down from his role as interim Rangers manager following his side's 5-0 defeat to Old Firm rivals Celtic on Sunday.

The 43-year-old officially took over the reins at Ibrox in December, agreeing a deal until the end of the season following two previous spells as caretaker in 2017.

Murty initially won 10 of his first 13 games after being confirmed as the interim boss, but has since won just two of his next seven to see Rangers slip down to third in the Scottish Premiership table.

Sunday's 5-0 loss to Celtic - the third at the hands of their Old Firm rivals in the space of just seven weeks - was enough to hand the Bhoys their seventh successive league title and proved to be the final straw for the Rangers board.

Official confirmation is yet to arrive from the club, but Liverpool youth coach Steven Gerrard is expected to be named as Murty's successor in the coming days.

Rangers take on Kilmarnock on Saturday with three points currently separating them from second-placed Aberdeen.
