Former Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo is unlikely to replace recently-sacked manager Brian McDermott at Reading, despite reports.

Former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo is reportedly unlikely to be appointed as Reading's new boss.

The 42-year-old, who led the Blues to FA Cup and Champions League glory last season before getting sacked at Stamford Bridge in November, is believed to have been approached by the struggling Premier League outfit over a possible short-term deal.

Despite speculation, the Royals are unlikely to secure the signature of Di Matteo following their decision to sack Brian McDermott, according to Sky Sports News.

McDermott, who took charge of Reading in 2009, was dismissed by the club due to their current second-from-bottom position in the league table, with nine games left to play.

Former Swindon Town boss Paolo Di Canio has emerged as the bookies' favourite to take the job.
