Ricardo Carvalho is banned from international football for one year after going AWOL while on Portuguese duty.

Ricardo Carvalho has been given a one-year international ban by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) following his walk-out from the team last month.

The Real Madrid defender left Portugal's training base without permission after being told he would not feature in their Euro 2012 qualifier against Cyprus.

The 33-year-old swiftly announced his retirement from international football, but should he decide to return, it must be after 12 months.

"We could have applied article 21 of the national team regulations, which supports the expulsion of a player for 24 months," read an FPF statement.

"Taking into account the player's record, the board decided on the removal of the player from the national team for one year, as well as the loss of prizes to be awarded as a result of any qualification for the Euro 2012 finals."

The former Chelsea centre-back has made 75 appearances for Portugal since his debut in 2003.
