No Euro 2016 spot for Republic of Ireland defender Marc Wilson

Republic of Ireland boss Martin O'Neill confirms that Stoke City defender Marc Wilson will not be part of the squad at Euro 2016 because of a knee injury.

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill has confirmed that Stoke City defender Marc Wilson will not be included in the final squad for Euro 2016.

The 28-year-old was part of the initial 35-man setup, but he has struggled to overcome a knee injury that he suffered in January.

Wilson last played for his national side in November when he came on as a substitute in a 1-1 playoff draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina.

"Marc Wilson has had a setback," Sky Sports News quotes O'Neill as saying. "The best thing for him is to take four or five weeks off. He will be out.

"It's really disappointing as he's not been part of the squad for a while. He had a bit of a setback a few weeks ago and tried his utmost again. But the best thing for him is to take that four or five-week rest and hopefully those problems with the knee clear up.

"He is feeling twinges when he kicks the ball with his right leg. He's disappointed, but he knew it would be a long shot."

Ireland will face the Netherlands in an international friendly on Friday.
