Barnsley knock Scunthorpe United out of League Cup on penalties

Barnsley advance into the second round of the League Cup after beating Scunthorpe United 6-7 on penalties at Glanford Park.

Barnsley have advanced into the second round of the League Cup, after they beat Scunthorpe United 7-6 on penalties at Glanford Park.

After a goalless first half, it took only a couple of minutes for the deadlock to be broken as Josh Scowen played in Paul Wilkinson, who managed to round the keeper but was fouled in the process.

Barnsley were awarded their second penalty of the match after Marley Watkins failed to score from the spot in the first half, but Scowen made no mistake this time, sending Joe Anyon the wrong way.

However, the game was all level shortly after, as Scott Laird's floated free kick caused problems in the visitors' area, with referee Graham Salisbury awarding a third penalty of the night.

Paddy Madden stepped up to equalise seven minutes into the second half.

Laird's deliveries into the box continued to cause issues for the Tykes defence, as Madden threw himself as the defender's cross, only for goalkeeper Nick Townsend to deny the forward and scramble the ball away.

The home side looked most likely to take the lead late on in the game as they continued to pile on the pressure, but neither side could double their goal tally as the game finished 1-1 in normal time.

Conor Hourihane had the chance to give Barnsley the lead in extra time, as he went through one-on-one with the goalkeeper but Anyon stood tall in the United net, thwarting the substitute's attempt.

The home nearly won the game deep into extra time, as Jordan Clarke's 40-yard, swerving strike forced Townsend into a save, keeping the score level and forcing penalties.

Both sides scored six penalties and missed once in the shootout, before Sean McAllister failed to convert his spot kick, leaving it to James Bree to score the winning penalty.

Barnsley won the shootout 7-6 and advance into the second round of the League Cup at the expense of Scunthorpe.
