The 27-year-old will remain with the League Two side with whom he started his professional career until January 1, 2014.
Williams will be eligible to play for Scunthorpe against Torquay United at the weekend.
The left-back joined United on a permanent contract in January 2012 and last featured for the Blades in their 3-1 away defeat to Brentford in August.
