Watford go top of Championship

Watford go top of the Championship with a 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Slavisa Jokanovic marked his first game in charge of Watford with a 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday to go top of the Championship.

The visitors had their opener on 21 minutes and it was a controversial one that left Wednesday furious.

Fernando Forestieri released Matej Vydra, who looked in an offside position, but his cut-back was eventually finished off by Odion Ighalo.

The Hornets doubled their advantage with seven minutes remaining in the first half when Almen Abdi's weak shot squirmed through the hands of goalkeeper Keiren Westwood.

Vydra went close after the break but his effort from a tight angle was saved by Westwood, before Forestieri struck the post after going through one on one with the goalkeeper.

Substitute Royston Drenthe almost reduced the deficit, but the former Real Madrid winger's well-struck effort was saved by Heurelho Gomes in the Watford goal.

However, Vydra made the result safe on 69 minutes when he lifted the ball over Westwood to send Jokanovic's side top of the table.
