Ronald Koeman: 'Fans must be realistic'

Ronald Koeman believes that Southampton supporters need to be realistic with their hopes for this season.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has urged the club's supporters to set realistic aims for this season.

After guiding the team to a seventh-place finish in his first campaign with the Saints, Koeman has watched his side collect two points from their opening three Premier League games and their Europa League bid was ended with a 1-0 loss to FC Midtjylland on Thursday night.

The Dutchman was forced to build a new squad following the departures of key players a year ago, and Morgan Schneiderlin and Nathaniel Clyne were also sold earlier this summer.

"The expectations are different to last year. People expect more but we have to be realistic with what happened and what we have lost in the last year," he told reporters.

"In the first season we changed a lot and after some weeks you improve and develop the players but now we have been playing more.

"We have time, but it is not what I like. We have time to improve and have good training sessions and we need that. That is one of the reasons in the mistakes from the last few days - we have to do less mistakes and learn about it."

Southampton take on Norwich City at St Mary's Stadium on Sunday.
