Southampton suffer third defeat on tour of Austria

Havard Nielsen and Dimitri Oberlin find the net to condemn Southampton to a 2-0 defeat in their third and final pre-season outing in Austria.

Southampton are still without a victory this pre-season following a 2-0 defeat to Red Bull Salzburg.

The Saints had earlier lost 1-0 to Valencia in the Audi quattro Cup semi-final, while the tournament hosts proved too strong in the third-place playoff.

There was some good news for boss Ronald Koeman, however, as Jay Rodriguez played a full part in the second 45-minute match in Austria.

Summer recruit Maarten Stekelenburg pulled off a fine save to prevent his side going a goal down early on, while only some fine defending by Cedric Soares kept the hosts at bay soon after.

The game's key moment came 19 minutes in when Havard Nielsen headed home from close range, which allowed Salzburg to push on in pursuit of a second.

That second goal arrived four minutes later through Dimitri Oberlin's effort at the end of a deflected Felipe Pires cross.

Rodriguez scuffed his only real opening of the contest late on, as the Saints rounded off their tour of Austria without a win from their three outings.
