Bolton Wanderers legend Kevin Davies named new Southport boss

Former Bolton Wanderers forward Kevin Davies is named as the new manager of National League North side Southport.

Southport have announced that former Bolton Wanderers striker Kevin Davies has agreed to become the club's new manager.

During his playing career, Davies made over 400 appearances for the Trotters, while the targetman also earned international recognition with England, but the 40-year-old has waited over two years before making the jump into management.

Southport currently sit in 16th place in the National League North table, and Davies claims that he is making the move into the dugout at the right time.

"I am delighted to be appointed as the new Southport FC manager. This is a great opportunity and the timing is right for me to step into management," he told the club's official website.

"Over my 22 year playing career I was privileged to work under some fantastic managers, including four who managed England. My career was built on hard work, passion and a strong desire to do whatever it takes to win a game of football. There is lots of hard work ahead and it is a challenge that I am relishing.

"This is a very exciting time to be involved with Southport FC with new investment to develop the stadium and infrastructure. Football is about creating memories and I, along with my assistant John Dreyer, players and staff, will be working tirelessly to take the club forward in a positive direction."

Davies - who will be assisted by John Dreyer - will take charge of his first game when Southport host Gainsborough Trinity on Saturday afternoon.
