Defending champions Spain and Italy will contest the Euro 2012 final tomorrow night. Here, Sports Mole previews the encounter.

While many regarded Spain's presence in the final of Euro 2012 as a banker bet, there were few people tipping Italy to progress all the way to tomorrow's showpiece event.

However, with the guidance of coach Cesare Prandelli and the right boot of Andrea Pirlo, the Azzurri have deservedly played their way into contention for the trophy.

Defending champions Spain are still considered favourites to win the title. Should they succeed, they will be the first nation to complete a European Championships - World Cup - European Championships treble.

Despite making the final, coach Vicente Del Bosque has been heavily criticised for his tactics throughout the tournament. Tomorrow he must decide between playing with either Fernando Torres, Fernando Llorente or Alvaro Negredo as a striker, or reverting back to six midfielders, with Cesc Fabregas the furthest forward.

Standing in Spain's way is an Italian side who caused them a number of problems during the group fixture between the two nations earlier in the competition. The Spaniards had the better of the possession, but Italy spurned a number of chances during the 1-1 draw in Gdansk.

They will be buoyed by the fact that Mario Balotelli has found some goalscoring form. The Manchester City striker showed his clinical side during the 2-1 semi-final win over Germany on Thursday. The controversial frontman also has the golden boot in his sights. He is currently joint top of the rankings on three goals and if he finds the net tomorrow, only Fabregas and Torres (two apiece) can realistically stop him from winning the award.

Full-backs Ignazio Abate and Christian Maggio will also be available for selection following an injury and suspension respectively.

Italy head into the encounter having not lost a competitive fixture against Spain in almost 100 years.
