Live Commentary: Panathinaikos 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur - as it happened

Sports Mole's live commentary of the Europa League Group J clash between Panathinaikos and Tottenham Hotspur.

Good afternoon and welcome to Sports Mole's live commentary of Tottenham Hotspur's trip to Greece to take on Panathinaikos in the Europa League.

Tottenham are looking for their first win in Group J after their 0-0 home draw against Lazio two weeks ago, and this is a game manager Andre Villas-Boas is demanding his side win.

Panathinaikos, on the other hand, are looking for their first points after the opening-day 3-0 defeat to Maribor.

Brad Friedel does not travel to Athens for Spurs, which means Hugo Lloris gets a start and there are a further two changes from Villas-Boas, who selects both Michael Dawson and Tom Huddlestone to start.

8.01pmThanks for joining Sports Mole for this game. If you want more, catch our coverage of Liverpool vs. Udinese here. That's all from me, goodnight.

7.58pmTake nothing away from the Panathinaikos goal. It was a classy move in a game that had lacked exactly that previously. On balance Spurs should have won but they can only have themselves to blame for not scoring more goals.

7.57pmSpurs still could not step up even after the equaliser and Panathinaikos could have won it. Really, they will need to create a lot more and get more shots on goal if they are to qualify from the group.

7.55pmSo there we have it. Tottenham were comfortable for large periods, if not dominant, but could not get a second goal and were punished by Toche's 78th-minute effort.

7.53pmFull-time! Panathinaikos 1-1 Tottenham

90+3 minAnother Mavrias cross is cleared. He's looked dangerous the young winger, as Quincy is subbed off late on.

90+3 minA Sissoko pass goes out of play and there might be time for only one more chance - but who for?

90+2 minSorry, it was Sandro's face, then Mavrias blew a great crossing opportunity. Spurs not looking likely here...

90+1 minChance! The free-kick is headed away and falls to Mavrias who smashes towards goal. However it comes off Caulker's face.

90 minYellow card! Quincy wins a free-kick and Townsend is booked for an earlier challenge, as that foul was from Dawson. Just three minutes of injury time.

88 minMavrias gets his first touch of the ball, but crosses straight to Lloris. There really should have been a Panathinaikos player or three attacking that.

87 minCaulker beats Karnezis to the ball and heads over. But the whistle has gone, the defender apparently fouled the goalkeeper.

87 minSandro earns a corner, which Bale will take..

86 minIt doesn't look likely at this point that either side will win this. It still doesn't have the urgency you might have expected that goal to force.

85 minChristodoulopoulos (thankfully for my fingers) is coming off for Mavrias.

83 minThere's suddenly urgency from the Greeks! They're closing down the previously comfortably Spurs back four. I wouldn't like to guess which way this is going.

82 minAnother free-kick from wide for the home side, Christodoulopoulos will swing it in... Or he won't, it was an awful attempt at a cross.

80 minNow Panathinaikos think they can get the winner. Christodoulopoulos finds Pinto in the box but he can't touch the ball on target. Sandro comes on for Huddlestone.

79 minI said at 1-0 it was still not over and Panathinaikos have proven just that. A touch of class from an ordinary side all night, and it's enough to level the scores. For now.

78 minSeitaridis finds his range with a glorious ball in behind to Toche, who knocks his finish in off the post! Unbelievable.

78 minGOAL! Panathinaikos 1-1 Spurs (Toche)

77 minLennon comes off for Andros Townsend. Also, Dempsey made way for Gylfi Sigurdsson a short while ago. The free-kick comes to nothing.

75 minYellow card! Lennon wins a free-kick in a dangerous position and it's a booking for Vyntra, I believe.

72 minChance! Defoe drives forward and his shot is deflected wide for a corner. Good play.

71 minToche floats the 30-yard effort over the bar. He never looked confident.

70 minFree-kick here for Panathinaikos after Huddlestone fouls Zeca. Potentially dangerous.

68 minQuincy finds Christodoulopoulos offside, who hits the post anyway. Good football from the hosts, though.

66 minIt's somewhat comfortable for Spurs, the Greeks aren't posing much threat. However, while it's 1-0 there's always a chance.

64 minSome nice passing between Quincy and Christodoulopoulos ends with Spurs's defence breaking down the move. Bale strikes wide from distance.

63 minDefoe and Vertonghen link down the left but a poor return pass from the Englishman ruins the chance.

62 minA spell of Panathinaikos possession ends with a poor Seitaridis cross that Lloris claims easily.

60 minThe game has settled down a bit, just what Spurs needed after the frantic opening 10 or so minutes to the half.

58 minChance! Dempsey needs no invitation to shoot, but from 35 yards it would take a lot. It's comfortable for Karnezis.

57 minThe pressing is all from the home side now. Can Tottenham withstand the pressure and score on the break?

56 minChance! Sissoko is through and Walker defends brilliantly to stop the substitute getting a shot away. Lively now this game.

55 minChance! Dempsey threads Defoe through, who takes a great first touch but fires his shot over. Great chance for 2-0.

54 minIt comes to nothing, but Lloris again looks a little suspect claiming the high ball.

53 minChristodoulopoulos puts in a free-kick and wins a corner off a Spurs head.

53 minChance! Quincy puts in a low cross and Dawson has to be alert to stop Toche from tapping in. Better from the Greek side.

52 minThis time Sissoko is down the right and he has a glorious chance to cross, but it's awful and straight to Lloris. Waste.

50 minPanathinaikos looking to use Sissoko down the left as much as possible, but a poor pass means he cannot get control.

49 minDefoe just ruled offside there as he looks to get in behind the Greek defence.

48 minTottenham again with the early pressure. Free-kick to be taken by Huddlestone once more... Offside.

46 minWe're back underway here. Ibrahim Sissoko is on for the hosts, he replaces Marinos.

7.01pmIf you want a summary of the first-half action before we get back underway, take a look at our report here.

6.56pmAs for Panathinaikos, their attacks have broken down far too often when they neared Tottenham's box. There has not been enough urgency in their play and the home crowd were getting frustrated towards the end of the half.

6.54pmSpurs were certainly the more positive side and attacked their opponents' half far more often. Although they haven't tested Karnezis very much, you feel they can step up if they need to.

6.52pmNo one player has stood out particularly, at least not in a positive way. Panathinaikos's goalkeeper Karnezis had a couple of awkward moments and Lloris at the other end completely messed up a cross and he was lucky to escape.

6.50pmSo the solitary Dawson goal separates the two sides at the break. In truth the deadlock looked unlikely to be broken until the free-kick, however if anyone deserves to be in front it is Spurs.

6.48pmHalf-time! Panathinaikos 0-1 Tottenham

45+1 minAnother Huddlestone free-kick comes in but Dawson is penalised for a foul as Caulker meets the cross.

44 minChance! Lloris is fortunate there. He makes a hash at a cross but there is no Panathinaikos player near enough to pounce.

43 minIt's patient from Spurs too, but the attack breaks down.

41 minDespite the goal Panathinaikos are still taking their time with possession. They can't find that killer pass.

39 minChance! Huddlestone wins possession and gets the ball back from Defoe and his well-struck effort is well saved.

36 minChance! Dodgy again from Karnezis, as a Bale strike is just put wide.

35 minThe ball in from Huddlestone is excellent, and Dawson is up clear of any markers to glance the header in. It was unlikely to come from open play but Spurs have the lead.

35 minGOAL! 1-0 Spurs (Dawson)

34 minFree-kick to Spurs on the left in a dangerous position as Vertonghen is caught late...

33 minWasteful is how I'd sum up Spurs so far. They may have had more possession, but Karnezis has only had the one real save to make.

31 minBurst through as Quincy tries to get on the end of a pass, but Lloris is out well.

29 minHowever, the corner goes straight down the throat of the French 'keeper.

28 minChristodoulopoulos (oh no) hits the wall from a free-kick from 30 yards. Walker heads back to Lloris but it's poor and a corner.

27 minChance! Shot on target from Lennon, but his strike from outside the box is comfortable for Karnezis.

25 minPoor goalkeeping then from a Defoe cross by Karnezis, but he gets away with it.

23 minWe're still yet to have a really good chance in this from either side.

23 minBale swings in a deep free-kick in a dangerous area and Toche heads away poorly. The hook back in though goes straight to Karnezis in goal.

21 minLovely from Toche as Panathinaikos again keep hold of the ball. The Spurs midfield do well to close down though and the Londoners are back on the ball.

20 minIt is a free-kick in a great position here from a handball. Bale steps up... Wide from Dempsey.

19 minGreat pace from Quincy but Spurs eventually manage to clear and break. However that also comes to nothing.

18 minDembele shows what he's capable of in the middle with a trademark drop of the shoulder and powerful burst. However, it comes to nothing.

17 minIt might be nearly empty, but the home fans are certainly making themselves heard. Good support that their players need right now.

16 minPanathinaikos are coming into this more now. They're keeping the ball well. That is until Vyntra puts it out of play..

15 minGood break down the right and Seitaridis has space. The cross was on but it was too close to Lloris.

13 minThe Greeks are struggling to break through when they get near the attacking third. Spurs' shape is holding up well.

12 minWalker bursts through and the ball falls for Bale to cross, but it's cut out once more. The home defence holding firm thus far.

10 minPanathinaikos work some possession but in the end Caulker cuts out the attempted through ball over the top.

9 minIt's still all Spurs on the ball, but no huge chances as yet as a Dembele cross is too deep.

8 minBale and Vertonghen work a chance for the latter to cross, but there's no-one to attack it in a white shirt and it's easy for Karnezis.

6 minBarely anyone in the ground tonight. Could be because the home side are struggling, could be the Europa League? Or it could be both.

5 minAnother Bale corner causes problems but the Greeks manage to clear in the end, before Walker is offside down the right.

4 minSpurs continue to press and Defoe earns another corner, their third already.

2 minPacey drive from Bale down the left but his cross is well hooked by front of Pinto. From the corner there are appeals for a handball, but it's another corner.

1 minAnd we're underway. Number 61 is Quincy - it's a personal peeve of mine random squad numbers...

6.00pmKick-off imminent now. Time for a quick prediction. I'm going for an edgy 2-1 to Spurs, but really I'm no good with that sort of things so don't put your mortgage on it.

5.56pmThe supply to Defoe will be key for Spurs tonight. And really they have many options now. Dembele can drive from deep, Bale and Lennon have pace to burn on the wings and Dempsey will link the midfield well as he did so successfully for so many years at Fulham. How will Triantafyllopoulos (oh yes) et al deal with the away attack?

5.51pmWe're less than 10 minutes away from kick-off in Athens.

5.50pmThat said, Spurs have not scored in three previous European away trips to Greece so it'll by no means be easy for the Londoners.

5.49pmVillas-Boas has spoken of his respect for the competition and his line-up tonight suggests he means what he says. It's tough to see Panathinaikos getting anything from this, although Quincy will probably be up for it with his Arsenal history.

5.46pmPanathinaikos have qualified every time they have been in a UEFA Cup or Europa League group stage. However defeat here would make it a difficult record to keep hold of.

5.40pmSpeaking of Arsenal, the side they beat last night, Olympiakos, are currently 11 points ahead of Panathinaikos in the Greek Superleague. It's not been a great start for tonight's hosts.

5.37pmA good omen for Spurs fans tonight: Panathinaikos have faced English opposition 16 times in European competition. They've won just once - against Arsenal in 2001.

5.34pmHere is the full team news to get you in the mood before kick-off, courtesy of Michael Penkman.

5.33pmIt's an impressive venue tonight. The Olympic Stadium has a capacity just shy of 70,000 and it hosted the 2007 Champions League final. Liverpool were beaten 2-1 that night by AC Milan.

5.29pmAll I'll say is I'm glad I have copy and paste.. Not that I'm gunning for a particular side, but I hope a couple of those players barely see the ball tonight!

5.27pmHere is the Panathinaikos team: Karnezis; Seitaridis, Triantafyllopoulos, Pinto, Vyntra; Christodoulopoulos, Zeca, Vitolo, Marinos; Owusu-Abeyie, Toche

5.24pmAnd my heart has sunk reading the Panathinaikos team. I might have to come up with some quick nicknames.

5.23pmSo Hugo Lloris gets a chance to stake his claim for the No 1 jersey as Brad Friedel does not travel. It's a strong side overall, with Michael Dawson in for William Gallas and Sandro dropping to the bench for Tom Huddlestone.

5.19pmFirst up, the Spurs team: Lloris; Walker, Dawson, Caulker, Vertonghen; Huddlestone, Dembele, Dempsey, Lennon, Bale; Defoe

5.17pmGood afternoon and welcome to Sports Mole's live commentary of Panathinaikos vs. Spurs in the Europa League.
