The home side caught Tottenham out early on, as a Charlie Adam free kick found the unmarked Steven N'Zonzi, who headed past Hugo Lloris to break the deadlock after just three minutes.

Gareth Bale looked to make it level just five minutes later, unleashing an effort from 25 yards out, but Asmir Begovic was able to tip it over the crossbar.

Spurs found the back of the net through Clint Dempsey in the 16th minute, but the assistant referee judged the American to be offside.

However, Dempsey got the visitors back on terms just three minutes later, as a defensive mix-up found Begovic off his line, allowing Dempsey to fire the ball in from 30 yards out.

Bale looked to set up Michael Dawson for a header before seeing his 10-yard strike stopped by Begovic late in the half, but the Wales international could not give his side the lead before half time.
