Andre Villas-Boas: "No place is guaranteed"

Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas says that no-one will be guaranteed a starting berth in the team this season.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas has declared that no-one is guaranteed a start in the team, despite breaking the club's transfer record three times in the summer.

Spurs spent over £100m in the transfer window and saw Paulinho, Roberto Soldado and Erik Lamela all smash the club's record as they arrived for £17m, £26m and £30m respectively.

Villas-Boas, who also brought in Christian Eriksen, Nacer Chadli, Etienne Capoue and Vlad Chiriches, claims that no-one has a divine right to play every game for the club.

"The players understand that if they do not perform there is always someone there to replace them," The Mirror quotes Villas-Boas as saying.

"No-one's place is guaranteed. All the players now face competition and that is the type of thing we want.

"We struggled in March and April last season when we had injuries and we did not have the strength in depth we needed when we pushed for the last Champions League spot. Now we have that strength."

Spurs beat Norwich City 2-0 on Saturday.
