Andre Villas-Boas: 'I only want one new striker'

Andre Villas-Boas will only bring in one striker despite Jermain Defoe currently being the only recognised striker at Spurs.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas has ruled out signing both Emmanuel Adebayor and Leandro Damiao by revealing that he only plans to bring in one striker.

Reports had suggested that Spurs were in the market for two forwards, with Jermain Defoe currently the only recognised frontman on the White Hart Lane books.

However, with his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, Villas-Boas believes two proven goalscorers and a young prospect gives the squad a perfect balance.

Considering that, the Portuguese tactician is poised to place his faith in 19-year-old Harry Kane, who featured regularly in pre-season.

"Normally there is one that doesn't get enough time that he feels he should be credited with," said Villas-Boas.

"That's not because you don't rotate enough, but because when you play a system with one striker it is very difficult to get the third one to play enough.

"Normally on my teams I like to promote the third one as a young striker who is competing for that place a bit more aggressively."

Villas-Boas revealed on Thursday that talks to sign Adebayor were ongoing.
