Former Real Madrid midfielder Guti has questioned his former club's pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Luka Modric.
The Spanish champions have been heavily linked with a move for the Croatian after he expressed his desire to play Champions League football next season.
Madrid have reportedly lined up a £30m-plus-Nuri Sahin move for the 26-year-old.
However Guti, who played over 500 games for Real before leaving two years ago, thinks that Manchester City's David Silva would be a better buy for Jose Mourinho.
"[Modric] hasn't even been the key man for Tottenham," Guti said. "I don't think he's done enough to play for Madrid.
"I would go for David Silva in this position. He's ideal for Real Madrid - young, talented with potential, and has achieved great things with Manchester City and Spain."
Spurs were on course for Champions League football this season only for Chelsea to win the competition and knock the North London club out.
