Spurs transfer news: Son Heung-min comments on contract situation, hints at no quick renewal

Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min hints that he is no rush to pen a new long-term contract with the Premier League club.

Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min has revealed that he has not entered discussions over a new contract.

Aside from Harry Kane, Son is widely regarded as the club's best player over the past decade having left Bayer Leverkusen for London in 2016.

The South Korea international has contributed 164 goals and 86 assists from his 414 appearances in all competitions.

However, Son has been unable to guide Spurs to any silverware and, like Kane, is yet to win any domestic team silverware during his career.

Kane ultimately moved to Bayern Munich in an attempt to lift a trophy, and Son will soon have a decision to make over whether he intends to follow suit.

What has Son had to say?

Son is now captain of the North Londoners and is part of a squad that is bidding to return to the Champions League in 2025-26, whether that be through the Premier League or winning the Europa League.

There is an argument that earning a spot at European football's top table through lifting the Europa League trophy would be most fulfilling, Spurs getting their campaign underway against Qarabag FK on Thursday night.

On Wednesday afternoon, Son took part in the pre-match press conference, giving an update on his future when quizzed on whether he will extend his terms past the end of the season

He said: "We haven't talked anything yet. It was very clear for me, I'm very focused for this season. At this age, every second is like a goal. Especially this season, we are in a lot of competitions, it feels like I'm taking even more care about this.

"I'm just fully focused on this situation and this year. I just want to win something that everybody in this club and these players and all around deserves. That's what I'm working for.

"In the future, you never know what's going to happen. But I will make sure I give everything for this club. It's almost ten years that I give everything. We'll see what happens. I still have a contract with the club which is the main important thing. I just want to give everything while I have my contract."

Is a new challenge a possibility?

Son is now 32 years of age and alluded to the fact that he has been 'giving everything' for the past eight years of his career.

Spurs would naturally prefer that the versatile attacker makes a decision sooner rather than later, yet he will know that offers will arrive from foreign clubs at the turn of the year if he bides his time.

Whether Spurs win a trophy or not, it is realistic to expect Son to consider an exit, but much may depend on what proposals are put in front of him from January onwards should he not sign a new contract.
