Dermot Gallagher: 'Stoke City didn't deserve penalty versus Brighton'

Former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher says that Stoke City should not have been awarded a penalty in their Premier League fixture with Brighton & Hove Albion.

Former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher has suggested that Stoke City were fortunate to be awarded a penalty against Brighton & Hove Albion.

In added-on time, Dale Stephens was adjudged to have fouled Jese Rodriguez inside of the penalty area, but Charlie Adam saw the resulting spot kick saved by goalkeeper Mathew Ryan.

Adam was unable to convert the rebound after being hauled down by a defender, but while Gallagher has acknowledged that the Scot was fouled, he has insisted that the initial penalty should not have been given.

Gallagher told Sky Sports News: "I don't think it is a penalty at all. If anything, I think Jese touches Stephens first, and there's not enough from him to go down.

"Regarding the rebound, I actually thought it was a foul, but I can understand why the referee doesn't give it. It's so, so difficult to see. The referee is not going to give a penalty, because he can't be convinced."

The 1-1 draw at the bet365 Stadium meant that Brighton remained ahead of Stoke in the Premier League standings.
