Tony Pulis backs Ryan Shawcross to impress for England

Tony Pulis backs Stoke City defender Ryan Shawcross to impress on the international stage with England.

Stoke City manager Tony Pulis has insisted that Ryan Shawcross will shine at international level after the defender was called up for England's World Cup qualifiers later this month.

The 25-year-old replaces John Terry in the squad and Pulis believes that it was time for Shawcross to be recognised by England manager Roy Hodgson.

Pulis told the club's website: "He's gradually got better year after year with us, so this is just reward for the performances he has been putting in week, week out for this club.

"The kid is desperate to play for England; he just needs a chance at international level and I am sure that when he gets an opportunity, he will take it.

"I am delighted for Ryan and his family that he has received this call-up, but I'm also delighted for this Football Club. It is the first time since 1984 that a Stoke City player has been called up for a competitive England squad."

Shawcross has made over 200 appearances for the Potters.
