The Football Association could punish Stoke City for appearing to use towels for throw-ins, despite rules stating that both teams need to agree on their usage on match days.

During the Potters' 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, footage shows Ryan Shotton using a towel underneath his shirt to dry the ball before throwing it into the box.

Despite Stoke being known for their towel tactics, the FA may discipline the Premier League side as the method could be infringing the rules, according to the Daily Mail.

A club spokesman defended the Shotton's action by stating: "It's a towelling vest that is the same colour as the shirt. The only stipulation is that, as long as the undergarment is the same colour as the predominant colour of the shirt, then it's not a problem. It does not stipulate what fabric it has to be."

Tottenham did not make use of towels during the match at the Britannia Stadium.
