Valencia sporting director backs Gary Neville

Valencia sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch backs manager Gary Neville and says that he is "calm" about the club's poor run of form.

Valencia's sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch has backed Gary Neville as the club's manager amid speculation about his future.

The former Manchester United defender is still searching for his first La Liga win in charge of the Spanish giants after eight games and was quizzed by reporters about his position after yesterday's home defeat to relegation candidates Sporting Gijon.

Neville admitted that the result, which left his side 19 points adrift of the top four, was the "most disappointing" of his tenure but claimed that the players had given their "best performance of the season" at the Mestalla.

"Gary has only been with us a short time," said Pitarch. "He didn't prepare the team in pre-season, so the situation wasn't easy when he arrived.

"I have total confidence [in Neville] and I give him all of my support. We're calm and we know he's going to turn this situation around."

Los Che are back in action on Wednesday night when they travel to Camp Nou to face Barcelona in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final.
