League One roundup: Walsall leapfrog Burton Albion, Wigan Athletic stop Bury run

Walsall leapfrog Burton Albion at the summit of League One, while Bury's six-match winning streak came to an abrupt halt at Gigg Lane by Wigan Athletic.

Walsall moved to the summit of League One with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Burton Albion in a nervy top-of-the-table encounter at the Bescot Stadium this afternoon.

Liam Kinsella's strike on 36 minutes looked like being enough, before Tom Bradshaw slotted a late penalty as the Saddlers leapfrogged Albion on goal difference.

Burton, who had not lost any of their previous six, looked on course to drop out of the automatic promotion places, but a late fightback from Wigan Athletic stunned 10-man Bury at Gigg Lane.

David Flitcroft's men looked to be cruising toward a seventh successive league victory when goals from Nathan Cameron and Tom Pope gave them a 2-0 lead by 60 minutes.

However, Chris Hussey was sent off with 12 minutes left for a second yellow card, and the Latics took full advantage as a Cameron own goal and Craig Morgan salvaged a dramatic point.

As a result, Bury drop to fourth as Gillingham beat Chesterfield 3-1 at the Proact Stadium to move one point behind second-placed Burton.

Rai Simons cancelled out John Egan's opener as the hosts ensured parity at the break, but second-half efforts from Rory Donnelly and Harry Lennon sealed the away win.

Elsewhere, Coventry City established a four-point cushion in the playoff places and heaped more misery on Fleetwood Town in the process after a last-gasp win at Highbury.

Newly-appointed Town boss Steven Pressley looked on course to stop the rot and win a point against his former employers, but a last-minute own goal from Richard Wood condemned them to a 1-0 defeat.

The setback represented Fleetwood's fifth successive League One defeat and Pressley's men now sit level on points with bottom-of-the-table Crewe Alexandra.

The Railwaymen put back-to-back defeats behind them by pulling out a 2-1 win away to Barnsley.

Ryan Colclough's 14th-minute opener for out-of-form Crewe was cancelled out immediately by Alfie Mawson, but Lauri Dalla Valle struck 11 minutes from time to stop the rot.

Results in full: Barnsley 1-2 Crewe, Bury 2-2 Wigan, Chesterfield 1-3 Gillingham, Fleetwood 0-1 Coventry, Oldham 2-4 Scunthorpe, Sheffield United 3-2 Rochdale, Shrewsbury Town 4-2 Colchester, Southend 1-0 Port Vale, Swindon 1-2 Peterborough, Walsall 1-0 Burton
