Western Sydney Wanderers extend lead at the top

Goals from Alberto Aguilar and Mark Bridge earn the Western Sydney Wanderers a 2-0 win over the Newcastle Jets.

The Western Sydney Wanderers have opened up a five-point lead at the top of the A-League standings thanks to a 2-0 victory over the Newcastle Jets this morning.

Unbeaten in their previous eight outings prior to this encounter at the Parramatta Stadium, Tony Popovic's men extended that run to nine thanks to goals either side of the break from Alberto Aguilar and Mark Bridge.

Having dominated much of the first half, Wanderers broke the deadlock in stoppage time when Spanish defender Aguilar turned in his first goal for the club since his arrival from Ponferradina in August.

The points were then made safe 20 minutes from time by the in-form Bridge, who scored for the fifth A-League game in succession.

Dario Vidosic's initial attempt was blocked, but when the ball fell for Bridge, the 30-year-old drilled it in.

While the hosts have picked up 25 points from a possible 27, in contrast the seventh-placed Jets are without a victory in their last six matches.
