A hamstring complaint will force Gary Caldwell to miss a number of Wigan Athletic's matches over the Christmas period.

Wigan Athletic defender Gary Caldwell has been ruled out of action for "two or three weeks" with a hamstring injury.

The Scottish defender aggravated the problem during his side's recent 3-0 defeat away at Newcastle United.

Having been sent for a scan on the problem, the results have shown that the 30-year-old will require a rest period until after Christmas.

"He missed the game against Reading as he was carrying a bit of a hamstring problem and that was accentuated in the Newcastle game," said manager Roberto Martinez.

"It will be between two or three weeks but he has recovered well and in the last couple of days he has been progressing."

Caldwell joined Wigan from Scottish champions Celtic in 2010.
