Report: Mike Phelan close to Wigan Athletic job

Mike Phelan reportedly closes in on becoming the new Wigan Athletic manager following the departure of Owen Coyle earlier this week.

Former Manchester United assistant Mike Phelan is reportedly close to becoming the new manager of Wigan Athletic following the departure of Owen Coyle on Monday.

The 51-year-old, who spent five years working under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, is thought to have jumped ahead of fellow reported candidates Ian Holloway and Celtic boss Neil Lennon in owner Dave Whelan's selection process.

Phelan, who took a break from the game following Ferguson's retirement, last week claimed that he had a lot to offer a club and, according to Goal.com, the former United player could be installed at the DW Stadium by the end of the week.

Coyle's six-month spell in charge of the Latics came to an end after Sunday's 1-3 defeat to Derby County.

Wigan sit 14th in the Championship, seven points clear of the relegation zone.
