Roberto Martinez has declined Aston Villa’s managerial post and will remain as manager of Wigan Athletic.
It was reported yesterday that he would hold talks with Villa, although Wigan chairman Dave Whelan was confident that Martinez would stay at the DW Stadium.
Martinez has now met with Whelan to discuss an extension to his contract, which had been due to run for another year, and a salary increase, according to Sky Sports News.
“I have never let him down on anything and he has never let me down,” Whelan had said. “I know I can never say never in football, but I would be very surprised if he is Aston Villa’s new manager.”
Bolton’s Owen Coyle is potentially next in line on Villa’s wishlist after a planned arrangement with Steve McClaren disintegrated earlier in the week.
