Ireland centre Jared Payne out of Rugby World Cup with foot injury

Ireland centre Jared Payne is ruled out of the remainder of the country's Rugby World Cup campaign with a fractured foot.

Ireland centre Jared Payne has been ruled out of the remainder of Ireland's Rugby World Cup campaign with a fractured foot.

The New Zealand-born Ulster player, who missed Ireland's 16-9 victory over Italy on Saturday, will take no further part in the competition.

"We feel for Jared and it was a bit of a moment today, it is always sad to see one of your family members in the situation he is in," Ireland scrum coach Greg Feek told reporters, adding that no decision will be made on a replacement until after Sunday's fixture against France.

Winger Tommy Bowe, a clubmate of Payne's, added: "He's been one of our most consistent players over the last couple of years. He's been playing some outstanding rugby and of course losing a player like that is going to be a massive blow to any squad.

"We know that's the nature of the competition, we've been very fortunate compared to some teams out there, but we know we've plenty of strength in depth in the squad that can fill in those positions."

Ireland have made two changes to their team to play France on Sunday, in a fixture that will decide who tops Pool D.
