Stanislas Wawrinka battles back to beat Carlos Berlocq

Stanislas Wawrinka recovers from losing the opener to beat Carlos Berlocq in three sets at the Miami Masters.

Stanislas Wawrinka recovered from losing the first set to beat Carlos Berlocq in the second round of the Miami Masters this evening.

In his first outing of the tournament, the world number six eventually recorded a 6(9)-7 7-5 6-2 victory to reach the third round.

Clay-court specialist Berlocq was not expected to cause Wawrinka many problems and yet secured the first break of the contest in game seven.

Wawrinka immediately put the set back on serve, but could not dominate Berlocq from the baseline and the Argentine prevailed 11-9 in a tie-break to move ahead.

The Swiss appeared angered by going behind and raced into a 2-0 advantage in the second, but he could not shake off the world number 68, who responded to lead 4-3.

The saving of two break points in game eight of the second proved crucial in the match, as Wawrinka denied Berlocq the chance to serve for the win and then claimed a break of his own to even up the contest.

Berlocq had held his own throughout the opening two sets, but could not live with Wawrinka in the third as the 2014 Australian Open champion won five out of the first six games before clinching the match at the fourth attempt.
