Grigor Dimitrov holds off David Goffin to advance

Number seven seed Grigor Dimitrov bounces back from a set down to defeat David Goffin and advance to the fourth round of the US Open.

Number seven seed Grigor Dimitrov held off a strong challenge from David Goffin to reach round four of the US Open.

Goffin began the match in incredible form as he took the game to the Bulgarian, breaking him three times and hitting eight winners to take the first set 6-0 in just 26 minutes.

The 23-year-old managed to hit back immediately using an array of powerful groundstrokes to hit 11 winners and earn a crucial break that allowed him to serve out the set 6-3.

Dimitrov used his experience to claim the third set as both players made several mistakes, but the Bulgarian produced the quality when needed to secure a 6-4 win.

The number seven seed showed a clinical edge in the fourth as broke the Belgian three times to ruthlessly book his place in the last 16 of the competition.

Dimitrov will now face Gael Monfils in round four at Flushing Meadows.
