Barcelona to hold early presidential election

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu calls an early presidential election for the end of the season amid increasing tension at the club.

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has announced that there will be an early presidential election at the end of the season.

The Catalan giants are currently experiencing a period of uncertainty, with a number of changes taking place behind the scenes at Camp Nou.

Director of football Andoni Zubizaretta left the club on Monday before his assistant Carles Puyol also departed.

Meanwhile, reports have suggested that Lionel Messi is unhappy with new manager Luis Enrique - speculation which Enrique has played down.

"We will call elections at the end of the season," Bartomeu told reporters. "The main reason is because we want to bring down the tension surrounding the club at the moment.

"The tension has been exaggerated, the club is on good solid ground, we are about to start the new project for the new stadium and in all different sports the teams are in contention for titles.

"I wanted to see out our mandate until 2017 but I think now that the club needs tranquility. It is good for the club that the members can vote for a project. There has been an astonishing amount of tension over the last few weeks and that is unacceptable for the club.

"Luis Enrique has a project that he is working on at the moment. He is restructuring the team, he has a job to do and there is no doubt he is the ideal man for this position. I just think it would be good for the team, for the club, for these elections to be called."

Barcelona are currently in second place in the La Liga table, one point behind Real Madrid.
