Gary Rowett: 'Clayton Donaldson miss cost Birmingham City'

Gary Rowett admits that Birmingham City were punished by Leeds United for Clayton Donaldson's failure to open up a 2-0 lead at Elland Road.

Birmingham City manager Gary Rowett has conceded that his side were punished for not converting the opportunity to open up a two-goal advantage at Elland Road yesterday afternoon.

An early penalty from Paul Caddis put the Blues 1-0 up against hosting Leeds United and Clayton Donaldson had the chance to double his side's advantage, but his close-range effort struck the post.

His miss was then duly punished four minutes from time when Luke Murphy rescued a point for Neil Redfearn's men.

"The key moment in the game for me was Clayton Donaldson's chance. It was a great ball in from Stephen Gleeson and it would have been 2-0 had he taken it. About seven yards out, he probably should have scored," Rowett told the club's official website.

"It ends up hitting the inside of the post and roll across the face of the goal. It was big moment, but I have to say that Leeds deserved something out of the game."

The draw lifted Birmingham up to 11th in the Championship table.
