Wayne Rooney reveals that he is keen to pursue a managerial career when he retires as a player.

Wayne Rooney has revealed that he is keen to pursue a managerial career when he hangs up his boots for good.

Rooney is currently with MLS outfit DC United having switched from Everton during the summer, and the 32-year-old has a contract with the North American team until 2022.

Manchester United and England's all-time record goalscorer is already looking to the future, however, and has confirmed that he wants to follow Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard into management.

"Football is what I know. It is what I have done my whole life," Rooney told the Daily Mail. "I just think it a shame when you see players who have had careers like mine, when they have been footballers from a young age, you see them finish and they just walk away from the game.

"Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard have moved into management and I think it is brilliant for those two. It is the right time for young English managers to step forward. I am sure in two or three years there will be clubs in the Premier League coming to try to snatch them away."

Rooney has scored four times and registered six assists in 13 MLS appearances for DC United since his arrival.
