Andros Townsend still has England hopes

Crystal Palace attacker Andros Townsend still hopes to earn a recall to the England squad despite his non-involvement under Gareth Southgate.

Crystal Palace attacker Andros Townsend is still hopeful of earning a recall to the England squad.

The 26-year-old won his 13th international cap in a friendly against Spain in November 2016, but has not featured for the Three Lions under current boss Gareth Southgate.

Despite being out in the cold, Townsend has insisted that he is good enough to earn a recall, and still believes that he could make the squad for the 2018 World Cup.

"I believe I can get into the England squad one day. When you're towards the bottom of the league, you must do something special. You need to be performing much better than the players at the top clubs," The Sun quotes Townsend as saying.

"I benefitted when I was at Spurs and now I have to up my level if I want to get back there. I haven't scored enough goals, I haven't played well enough but I don't think that ship has sailed. I still like to believe whether it be next season or the season after that — or even this summer...  one day I'd like to be in that squad."

Townsend has scored twice and registered eight assists in 32 appearances for Palace this season.
