Fiorentina, Genoa share six goals

Alberto Aquilani scores a hat-trick but it is still not enough for Fiorentina to claim all three points as they are held to a 3-3 draw by Genoa.

Fiorentina missed the chance to move within one point of the Champions League places in Serie A, having been held to a 3-3 draw by Genoa.

Alberto Aquilani scored a hat-trick for the hosts, but it wasn't enough to claim all three points as La Viola came from behind twice to share the spoils.

The hosts almost took the lead after just four minutes when Alessandro Matri was slipped on goal and took it round the keeper, but Mattia Perin recovered in time to block his shot from a tight angle.

Genoa broke the deadlock in the 27th minute after the referee had controversially awarded a penalty for a foul by Neto on Luca Antonelli inside the box.

Alberto Gilardino stepped up and made no mistake against his former side to give the visitors the lead.

That advantage lasted barely six minutes, however, as Fiorentina were awarded a spot kick of their own just after the half-hour mark, allowing Aquilani to send the keeper the wrong way and net his first of the night.

Genoa were back in front less than two minutes later as Luca Antonini pounced on a loose ball in the area to slide his shot past Neto for an immediate response.

The home team equalised for the second time in the match just before half time when a scramble inside the box resulted in the ball falling at the feet of Aquilani, who fired his shot into the bottom corner.

The visitors came within inches of regaining the lead again eight minutes after the restart when Moussa Konate latched onto a dangerous cross, only to see his header come back off the post.

Aquilani completed his hat-trick just before the hour mark, picking up a Joaquin pass in space before lashing a strike past Perin to give his side the lead for the first time in the match.

Genoa levelled things up in the 77th minute when Fiorentina failed to deal with a corner into the area, allowing Sebastian De Maio to slot the ball home from inside the six-yard box.

The hosts almost won it late on when Facundo Roncaglia's long-range effort swung just past the post, but they were forced to settle for a draw.
