Ivory Coast ease past Senegal

Didier Drogba and Gervinho play important roles as Ivory Coast get the better of Senegal 3-1 at home in their World Cup playoff first-leg clash.

Ivory Coast have defeated Senegal 3-1 in the first leg of their World Cup playoff in Abidjan.

Didier Drogba opened the scoring for the Ivorians as early as the fifth minute from the penalty spot after Gervinho was brought down inside the penalty box.

The hosts doubled their advantage seven minutes later when Ludovic Sane inadvertently put the ball into his net while trying to clear Gervinho's cross.

The Roma forward was involved in the Ivorians' third goal of the match when he set up Salomon Kalou four minutes into the second half.

Papiss Cisse volleyed home deep into stoppage time for Senegal to give them a glimmer of hope for the second leg.
