A penalty from Steven Gerrard gives Liverpool the advantage over Swansea City during the opening 45 minutes at Anfield.

A penalty from Steven Gerrard has sent Liverpool into the break 1-0 up against Swansea City at Anfield this afternoon.

It was a half that Liverpool dominated against a much-changed Swansea side. However, both Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez failed to convert opportunities during the opening exchanges.

The home side's pressure eventually told with 33 minutes gone when Suarez was tripped up inside the area by Kemy Agustien. Despite the fact that he missed from the spot against West Bromwich Albion on Monday evening, captain Gerrard stepped up to beat Michel Vorm from 12 yards.

Liverpool continued to look the more likely to score during the remainder of the half, but Swansea managed to hold firm.

Stewart Downing went close on two occasions, but both of his left-footed strikes were blocked.
