Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge may not be risked for Merseyside derby

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers says that he is unwilling to take a gamble on the fitness of Daniel Sturridge.

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge is touch and go for next weekend's Merseyside derby against Everton, as the striker continues his recovery from injury.

The England international recently resumed light training following a spell on the sidelines, but Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is unwilling to rush him back for the sake of one game.

"We wouldn't rush him back because of one game. Unless he's fit enough to produce for us then I wouldn't rush it," The Mirror quotes Rodgers as saying.

"He does have a chance for the derby, yes. It's just how the injury has responded and he's working well but we'll know more early next week. He's out on the field and he'll be back in full training at the beginning of next week."

The Merseyside derby takes place at Anfield a week on Sunday.
