Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has admitted that it would be "unfair" on Liverpool if the 2019-20 season was declared null and void.
Top European leagues are understood to remain committed to completing the campaign in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, which has decimated the sporting calendar worldwide.
However, the Belgian league last week opted to cancel their season and, while leaders Club Brugge were declared champions, should a similar decision be taken in the Premier League then there is no guarantee that runaway leaders Liverpool would be awarded the title.
Berbatov believes that the Merseysiders deserve to be crowned champions, though, having gone into the enforced shutdown with a 25-point lead over their nearest challengers.
"People are suggesting to give the title to Liverpool, and honestly they deserve it the way they had been playing, nobody was going to catch them," Berbatov told Betfair.
"With the way they play their games, the football they produced and how far they are in front, they fully deserve the title this season. It's so strange, and it will be unfair on them if the season is voided, they will be so disappointed."
Liverpool, who have not been crowned champions of England since 1990, are just six points away from ending their 30-year title drought.
