Manuel Pellegrini's side went ahead on the stroke of half time when Fernandinho's cross found Alvaro Negredo, who headed past Paul Robinson.

The Spaniard went on to double his tally moments after the restart, this time beating substitute goalkeeper Simon Eastwood with a chipped finish.

Edin Dzeko made it 3-0 by firing into the roof of the net in the 67th minute.

Sergio Aguero made his comeback from injury to replace Negredo in the 72nd minute, and it took the Argentine mere seconds to make his presence felt with a goal.

Dzeko then rounded off the victory in the 79th minute by turning home Jesus Navas's cross at the near post.

City will play Watford at home in the fourth round.
